Municipality spends R5 million on business breakfast
While a breakfast meal at a food outlet costs about R65, with the expensive exceeding just over a R100. The Zululand Local Municipality led by the Independent Freedom Party(IFP) last month hosted a business breakfast amounting to R5 million which was attended by 400 people. While the municipality is proud of unveiling an R800 million invested by the private sector in the area during the breakfast, Kwazulu-Natal Co-operate MEC, Sipho Hlakuma, said the investigation will leave no stone unturned into how the session accumulated to the R5 million.
“Our investigation will look into whether council approval was sought for the expenditure and any other issue relating to the hosting of the so-called breakfast,” he said.
The African National Congress accused the IFP led municipality of campaigning using state resources. The Party’s Provincial Spokesperson, Ntlakanipho Ntombela on the MEC, Auditor General and Public Protector to investigate the matter.
“This is the same municipality which failed to implement the forensic report detailing corruption by Mayor Thulasizwe Buthelezi,” he said.
Meanwhile, Buthelezi said he is not bothered by the investigation because they are not hiding anything” As they are investing, they must continue investigating, We have nothing to say and we have nothing to hide,” he said.
