Murder accused WSU student remains in custody after first court appearance

The 29-year-old Walter Sisulu University (WSU) student accused of stabbing a fellow student to death has made his first appearance in court.

Sesethu Magxala was remanded in custody during Thursday’s brief court appearance.

He was arrested on Monday following the murder of 24-year-old Kuhle Bunguli at a student residence in Southernwood, East London.

Police say that Bunguli, who was a 3rd-year Human Resource Management student, was cleaning his room when he became involved in a heated argument with Magxala.

It is alleged that Magxala walked past the Bunguli’s room and made a comment about him using “muthi”.

Bunguli took offence to this comment and a fight broke out between the two.

According to police, other students broke up the fight, but Magxala allegedly returned with a knife.

Bunguli is said to have grabbed a pair of scissors to defend himself but was stabbed twice in the chest and collapsed.

Magxala and other students took Bunguli to a hospital where he was declared dead

The accused, a 3rd-year Mechanical Engineering student, sustained minor injuries during the incident.

A remand date for Magxala’s court appearance is not yet known.
