Nzimande concerned about NSFAS irregularities and poor governance

Minister of Higher Education, Science and Technology Blade Nzimande has penned a letter to the board of the National Student Financial Aid Scheme regarding concerns about irregularities, mismanagement and poor governance.

This follows an investigation by Werksmans attorneys. Nzimande wants the board to furnish him with a detailed plan of how they will implement the recommendations in the report. He has also called for an investigation into the allegations by the former NSFAS CEO, Andile Nongogo, about claims he had lodged against the institution.

His directive comes as the financial scheme failed to pay monthly allowances to more then 100 000 university students.

The investigation report by Werkmans Attorneys found Nongogo  had a relationship with one of the companies appointed for the new NSFAS direct payment system.

“This must inevitably include close monitoring of the very important service delivery aspects, which include the timeous payment of student allowances, as well as the continued accreditation of student accommodation.

“Given the serious and sensitive nature of the report, officials of the department are still studying the report, guided by our legal department, to be in a good stead to advise me on how best comprehensively to respond thereto,” said Nzimande.
