Police minister Bheki Cele to visit Lusikisiki amid taxi violence

Minister of Police Bheki Cele is expected to visit Port St Johns in Eastern Cape following deadly taxi-related violence.

According to Colonel Priscilla Naidoo, three security officials from one taxi association from Lusikisiki were fatally injured while five other persons from the Port St Johns side sustained gunshot wounds. In the ensuing attack, an 11-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet and was taken to hospital for treatment. Three vehicles were torched.

Police Ministry spokesperson Lirandzu Themba: “The Minister of Police, together with the Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, and the Premier of Eastern Cape, Oscar Mabuyane, will engage the management of the SAPS [South African Police Service] in the province on their responses to the taxi disputes, as well as engage the community and relevant stakeholders in an effort to bring lasting solutions to the taxi-related violence.”
