Poverty forces Butterworth mother to kill her three children

Eastern Cape Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Nomthetheleli Mene, has expressed sadness following the death of Bongeka Buso and her three children in Butterworth on Sunday.

It is alleged that Buso killed her children because of poverty. “It is a deeply concerning and heart-breaking issue that women facing poverty can be driven to such despair. Socioeconomic challenges can exacerbate their vulnerability to mental health issues. Addressing poverty and promoting mental health support is crucial to prevent such tragedies. As we commemorate Women’s Month, I urge women to raise their voices and speak out,” said Lieutenant General Mene .

According to Police spokesperson Colonel Priscilla Naidu, a friend who visited the deceased early on Sunday morning made the shocking discovery. Buso’s body was found hanging from a rope, her five-year-old daughter, Oratile Buso and eight-year-old Orabile Buso were found on their beds, allegedly poisoned while the 14-year-old Anathi Buso was found lying on the floor next to the bed with a knife in her neck.
