President Ramaphosa extends deployment of soldiers to September

President Cyril Ramaphosa on Tuesday extended the deployment of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members until 13 September.

The extension of the soldiers will cost taxpayers more than R240 million. About 10 000 soldiers will be retained for the next 30 days.

The National Assembly

Parliament said it received correspondence from Ramaphosa regarding the extension.

SANDF members were deployed to diffuse the violent riots that left just over 300 people dead in Gauteng and KwaZulu Natal last month.

Earlier this month, the SABC confirmed that members of the SANDF were deployed at its headquarters in Auckland Park and its offices in Durban.
