Rural Innovator transforms community with DIY energy solutions, Wi-Fi, and X-Ray Technology

In a remarkable display of ingenuity, Vuyani Mgijima from Sijoka in Matatiele, Eastern Cape, has become a beacon of innovation for his community. After successfully creating a sustainable energy source to power his home during load shedding, he is now expanding his efforts to provide free Wi-Fi and X-ray capabilities.

In 2022, using salvaged materials like corrugated iron, metal scraps, and copper wire, Mgijima designed an engine that generates electricity from the water of the nearby Umzintlava River. This week, he welcomed The Informer to showcase his latest project: a community Wi-Fi system that operates without the need for expensive data plans.

“I realized that after generating electricity for my home, there was so much more I could do,” Mgijima explained. He fashioned a Wi-Fi connection by repurposing a satellite dish from a neighbor and an old TV aerial, combining them with his electricity generator. The result? Free Wi-Fi access for local youth, who can now connect for school projects and social media.

While proud of his achievements, Mgijima is conscious of the economic implications. “I can’t let the community use my innovation entirely for free. That would hurt our economy. People need to purchase data to utilize the Wi-Fi,” he noted.

In addition to Wi-Fi, Mgijima has developed a GPS system that connects Matatiele town to Sijoka, allowing for easy identification of homes in the area. “This can enhance security; I can monitor neighboring properties from my cellphone while at home,” he added.

A curious mind and a thirst for knowledge have always driven Mgijima. After graduating from Mt Hagreves Secondary School in 1999, where he excelled in Biology, Physical Science, Mathematics, and Geography, he has continued to tinker and innovate. “I was always fascinated by geography and had countless questions about the world around me, from why the Pacific Ocean is colder than the Indian Ocean to the mechanics of toys I played with,” he reflected.

Looking ahead, Mgijima dreams of building an electric vehicle to further empower his community. However, he emphasizes the need for support from the government to realize his vision and inspire the youth. “I want to see my innovations uplift the Matatiele community at an affordable rate,” he concluded.

With his inventive spirit and dedication to his community, Vuyani Mgijima is not just lighting up homes—he’s illuminating the path to a brighter, more connected future.
