Severe weather wreaks havoc across Eastern Cape: Fires and Snow disrupt communities

Recent weather conditions in parts of Matatiele, Joe Gqabi, and other Eastern Cape regions have caused significant disruptions, with cold weather, strong winds, and veld fires ravaging several villages.

Veld Fires Cause Destruction in Khauoe Village, Ward 25 Yesterday, reports confirmed that three homesteads in Khauoe village, ward 25, were engulfed by fire. The blaze, initially a veld fire, spread rapidly due to strong winds, affecting nearby homes. Firefighters promptly responded, but unfortunately, several houses were consumed by the flames. Disaster management officials are currently on-site assessing the damage.

Snowfall in Northern Eastern Cape Affects Road Safety :Transport Spokesperson Unathi Binqose has issued a warning to motorists traveling through high-lying areas and mountain passes in the northern parts of the Eastern Cape. Heavy snowfall has led to the closure of several roads, including Barkly Pass on the R58 between Barkly East and Lady Grey. Traffic law enforcement officers are closely monitoring other critical mountain passes, such as Penhoek Pass on the N6 between Komani and Jamestown, Lootsburg Pass on the N9 between Graafreinet and Middelburg, and Wapadsberg Pass on the R61 between Graaf Reinet and Nxuba. In addition, reports indicate snowfall in the Tlokoeng area, impacting the distribution of electricity in Tlokoeng (Mt Fletcher) and Matatiele.This severe weather pattern has posed significant challenges to local communities, requiring swift response and caution from all residents and travelers in affected areas.
