Tensions rise in Matatiele Local Municipality as dual Speakers emerge
Residents of Matatiele Local Municipality are bracing for potential chaos at Wednesday’s council meeting following the controversial election of Ward 19 councillor Sharreen Booth as the new Speaker. This development has led to a rare situation where both Booth and current Speaker Nonzwakazi Ngwanya will be vying for control of the council.
The turmoil began during a Special Council Meeting on Monday, where councillors discussed an urgent item concerning Municipal Manager Lizo Matiwane. On October 18, councillors Vumile Kondile and Makopano Shale proposed Matiwane’s suspension. Matiwane then decided to take legal steps against them demanding that they must apologise. On Monday’s Special Council meeting 20 councillors voted in favor of Matiwane being suspended.. Ngwanya, who was presiding over the meeting, later adjourned it after Matiwane was called back to the session.
Ngwanya expressed her confusion over the recent developments, stating, “I heard that Cllr Booth has been elected, and it is said that she must be allocated a car and security guard. I don’t know how this happened. It is now up to the ANC to deal with the matter.”
After the adjournment, a faction of ANC councillors remained and decided to support Matiwane’s continuation in office. During this meeting, Cllr Mzwamandla Nyembezi nominated Cllr Booth as the new Speaker, with backing from Cllr Ntabeni. This has resulted in a scenario where both Ngwanya and Booth will attempt to preside over the upcoming council session.
ANC Regional Spokesperson Lungisile Mzanywa weighed in on the situation, stating that Booth’s election is “non-existent” according to the party. He expressed support for the councillors addressing issues of maladministration in line with local government laws.
As the council meeting approaches, all eyes are on Matatiele as tensions continue to mount over the leadership struggle. Municipality is yet to respond in the matter.
