Tragic Bus Overturns on N2 Near Port Shepstone: MEC Duma Sends Support Team
A bus, deemed unroadworthy, has overturned on the N2 near Port Shepstone while en route from the Eastern Cape to Durban, carrying over 33 passengers. Tragically, four people have lost their lives, and we extend our heartfelt condolences to their families, says MEC for Transport and Human Settlements in KZN Siboniso Duma.
MEC Duma’s statement said the accident happened today and he is coordinating with Eastern Cape MEC for Transport Xolile Nqatha to ensure that the families of the victims receive necessary assistance. He said injured passengers have been transported to public health facilities in the Ugu District for treatment.
“The bus driver has been taken into custody at Margate Police Station and will face charges of culpable homicide. The vehicle is currently being held at the RTI Offices in Port Shepstone for a thorough examination. We will enlist the expertise of trained examiners to conduct a full investigation into the incident”.
“We are committed to taking strong action against anyone found to have violated traffic regulations. Reckless driving, drinking and driving, or cutting corners will lead to severe penalties, including prison terms for offenders”.
Duma thanked the emergency rescue services, SAPS, tow truck drivers, and all personnel working alongside the RTI for their efforts during this incident.
“I have also been in communication with MEC for Health Nomagugu Simelane, Ugu District Mayor Cllr Skhumbuzo Mqadi, and Ray Nkonyeni Local Municipality Mayor Cllr Zodwa Mzindle. We have agreed to adopt an integrated approach to assist the injured and finalize the rescue operation”, concluded Duma..
