Two South Africans Killed In Israel And Hamas Conflict
Israel’s Embassy in South Africa says two South African citizens have been killed in the conflict with Hamas. The embassy released a list of killed and missing international citizens Thursday.
The embassy has not yet released the names and details of the victims, but said they were among the foreign nationals who were targeted by Hamas in a surprise attack on Saturday, October 9, 2023. Hamas launched rockets, drones, and commando raids from land, air, and sea, killing hundreds of Israelis and taking dozens of people hostage.
Israel responded with a massive military operation, code named Operation al-Aqsa Storm, to stop the Hamas attacks and rescue the hostages. Israel has been bombing Gaza with airstrikes and artillery, while also sending ground troops and tanks into the enclave. The Israeli military said it has killed more than 1,000 Hamas fighters and destroyed hundreds of rocket launchers, tunnels, and weapons depots.
However, the operation has also caused a humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where more than 2 million people live under a blockade imposed by Israel and Egypt. The strikes have damaged or destroyed thousands of homes, schools, hospitals, and infrastructure, leaving many people without water, electricity, food, or fuel.
The death toll on both sides since the weekend is well over 2,000.
