UFH condemns spread of unfounded rumours

The University of Fort Hare (UFH) has condemned the spread of misinformation on social media that conflates National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) private accommodation payment delays with the death of Nosicelo Mtebeni, and an incident over the weekend where a student ended his life by jumping from a tall building.

Mtebeni was brutally murdered, allegedly by her 25-year-old boyfriend, Alutha Pasile, at Quigney in East London.

The UFH Student Fees and Financial Aid Office confirmed that NSFAS payments to Mtebeni were made and were not outstanding.

University Spokesperson Jenay Petrus, says claims on social media that Mtebeni became destitute and was forced into pursuing an unwanted living arrangement with her alleged murderer, are untrue.

“The university views the encroachment and escalation of crime that has plunged East London CBD, suburbs of Quigney and Southernwood in a state of absolute desolation and decay, as an indirect cause of Ms Mtebeni’s death. A significant body of worldwide research demonstrate the linkages of dangerous illegal substances and femicide,” says Petrus.
