Uitenhage mother arrested for selling infant twins for R50 a day
Uitenhage Magistrate Court refused the bail application of the single mother accused of trafficking her infant twins in exchange for R50 a day. The couple the babies were sold were released on bail and are expected to return to court on July, 26 to allow the investigation to be concluded.
According to the National Prosecuting Authority Spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani, it is alleged that when the 35-year-old mother became pregnant, she reached an agreement with her co-accused to sell her unborn child to them in exchange for R50 per day, and for other items like food and stress medication.
Ngcakani said the mother gave birth to the twin girls on the 27th of May this year and was discharged the following day where she immediately gave her children to the unemployed couple. The suspects were all arrested on the 2nd of June. A medical examination revealed that the babies were malnourished, underweight and that one had a cellulitis bacterial infection under one of her arms.
