Umzimvubu vehicle licensing supervisor convicted of fraud

The Mthatha Serious Commercial Court on Tuesday convicted Nolundi Mbele (46)of fraud. It is reported that between 01 July 2019 and 31 March 2020, Mbele was working at Umzimvubu Municipality as the Supervisor of the licensing department. She failed to deposit the monies that were paid for licensing of vehicles at the municipality to the account of the Department of Transport and took it for self-enrichment.

The matter was reported to the Mthatha based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation team of the Hawks in April 2020 to commence investigations. The investigations led to the arrest of Mbele on 07 June 2021 and she made a short court appearance at Mount Frere Magistrates’ court where she was released on R5000 bail. The matter was later referred to Mthatha Serious Commercial Crime for trial. The investigation brought forward evidence that Mbele had prejudiced the Department of Transport cash to the value of more than R120 000.
