Unemployed youth encouraged to apply for assistant posts

Unemployed South Africans are already encountering problems with applying for the assistant posts published by the Department of Basic Education with just a few hours of its launch on the internet. In 2020, President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that almost 300 000 unemployed youth would be hired as teaching assistants in public schools.

Department Spokesperson, Elijah Mhlanga on Monday encouraged people between ages 18 and 35 are encouraged to visit the Department of Basic Education’s social media platforms to apply.

“It was highly welcomed by school governing bodies and general communities because the parents knew that there were more people in school looking after their children. Teachers will focus on teaching and the assistants will provide support in homework,” says Mhlanga.

“In fact, it’s even needed more now because schools are on a rotational timetable. When learners are not in school, they are given projects to do at home. When they come back, the assistants will provide support to teachers to check if indeed the work has been done, while the teachers are focusing on work going forward,” he adds.
