Vandalized road infrastructure remains in turmoil
With just less than 48 hours before schools reopen in the Alfred Nzo District, there are great concerns of how learners are going to reach schools in the rural areas as road infrastructure have not been reconstructed since their fall off due to heavy rains.
A number of bridges in some villages have been destroyed to the ground, while other are covered with water, causing constraints in movements.
Executive Mayor Cllr Vukile Mhlelembana has warned people to refrain from crossing rivers where there are heavy water flows.
Meanwhile, Cogta Spokesperson Mamkeli Ngam says they have not received reports on huge damages on the infrastructure.
“Although the department is having a team of people waiting to collect reports from municipalities, we have not received reports of damages caused by the recent heavy rains,” he said.
Alfred Nzo District Municipality Spokesperson, Lixolile Petela says two people have died in the district due to the floods.
He said an adult female was struck by lightning at Winnie Madikizela Mandela Municipality, another teenage girl died after being washed away by floods.
Police in Matatiele are still searching for two women who died in the Afsonering area after being swept by floods.
