Nigerian High Commission apologises as KuGompo protest turns violent over ‘Igbo King’ row

The Nigerian High Commission has apologised to Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane following tensions over the alleged coronation of a Nigerian “Igbo king” in the province.

In a statement, the commission said the event was misunderstood, describing it as a cultural celebration rather than a formal installation.

“We assure the Honourable Premier that the supposed installation was a mere cultural celebration, and we are genuinely sorry for the negative perception this development may have caused,” the commission said. “The pomp, fanfare, and media surrounding the event, which understandably drew public ire, are highly regretted.”

The commission added that it holds South Africa’s traditional institutions in high regard and would not allow its nationals to undermine them.

“We hold the traditional institutions of South Africa in the highest regard and would not allow our nationals living in any part of the country to degrade, disrespect or affront the traditional council,” it said.

It further warned that claims around the incident were misleading and risk inflaming tensions between Nigeria and South Africa. The commission has expressed willingness to visit the Eastern Cape to engage affected communities and formally convey an apology on behalf of the Nigerian government.

The apology follows a protest in KuGompo (formerly East London) that turned violent. At least 13 people were injured, while 10 vehicles were torched and set alight. Shops belonging to foreign nationals were also looted. Authorities have confirmed that no arrests have been made.

Premier Mabuyane and the national government have since called for calm. The Eastern Cape Provincial Government has strongly condemned the violence, stating: “We unequivocally condemn all acts of violence, criminality, and lawlessness. South Africa remains a constitutional democracy governed by the rule of law.”
