Nine taxis were destroyed in a fire at the Nyanga Taxi Rank in the early hours of Friday.
According to South African Police Service spokesperson Captain F.C Van Wyk, officers from Nyanga SAPS were patrolling Terminus Road around 01:30 when they noticed smoke coming from the taxi rank.
Police investigated and found nine taxis alight β five Toyota Quantums and four Iveco Sprinters. The City of Cape Town Fire and Rescue Service was called to the scene and managed to extinguish the blaze.
βAn enquiry was registered for investigation. No injuries were reported. SAPS members are still on the scene and patrol vehicles have been sensitised to patrol all taxi routes and ranks,β said Van Wyk.
The cause of the fire is still unknown, although authorities are investigating whether it could be linked to ongoing taxi route disputes.
