NMBM Mayor leases R25m municipal transformer to a private company

ANC provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi has demanded an explanation from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Executive Mayor about how a R25m municipal transformer was leased out to Coega Steels before the council’s approval.

“The ANC has taken note, with serious concern, of media reports alleging the removal of municipal property, specifically a transformer belonging to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, to a private company,”

“If proven, these allegations raise grave concerns regarding governance, accountability, and the protection of public assets entrusted to the municipality,” wrote provincial secretary Lulama Ngcukayitobi.

The R25m transformer was procured to provide backup for the Swartkops and Greenbushes substations.

On September 11, an agreement was signed to lease the unit to Coega IDZ-based Coega Steels at R250,000 a month for a year.

When asked about the matter, Lobishe said that the matter was now before the court.

“The transformer lease is in court [the judicial review], so I can’t speak on it. Council deliberated and suggested that it goes to court, and therefore I can’t speak further on it. The judge will make a determination on the matter,” she said.

On the other news, Lobishe’s  bank account was flagged for not complying with the Financial Intelligence Centre Act (Fica).

When asked about this, “They needed proof of source of income and a payslip. That was the only issue,” she said.
