The spokesperson for the National Union of Metalworkers of South Africa (Numsa) Phakamile Hlubi-Majola has resigned after receiving death threats.
In her resignation letter, Majola stated that this is the third time a death threat has been made to her life.
In her official statement, she said:
“I cannot continue in a role that puts my life and my family at risk. My decision is about safety, not a retreat from the values I have always stood for.”
Majola said she received a call, on Saturday while travelling to Cape Town from a person warning her that people have been sent to assassinate her and were tracking her movements.
With NUMSA’s National Congress set for later this year, Hlubi-Majola said she fears tensions and security risks will escalate, adding that she can no longer expose herself or her family to further danger
