OR Tambo Police intensify crime crackdown, recover hijacked vehicles and firearms

Police in the OR Tambo District have intensified their fight against crime, recovering two hijacked vehicles and illegal firearms in separate incidents in Qumbu and Port St John’s between Friday, 20 March and Saturday, 21 March 2026.

According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), the operations led to the arrest of a 66-year-old male suspect, as officers continue efforts to clamp down on violent crime in the area.

In the first incident, police in Qumbu acted on information received on Friday evening regarding a hijacked Hyundai bakkie in KwaBhaca. Details of a vehicle allegedly used in the crime were circulated, leading officers to spot a Toyota Hilux believed to be linked to the hijacking.

When police attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off, triggering a high-speed chase. The suspect later abandoned the vehicle at Mjikweni locality and fled on foot, evading arrest. Inside the abandoned vehicle, officers recovered a 9mm pistol with an erased serial number.

In a separate incident in Port St John’s, police operations resulted in further recoveries, although details surrounding that case are still being processed.

Police have since confirmed that investigations are ongoing, and efforts are underway to locate the suspect who fled the Qumbu scene. Authorities have reiterated their commitment to tackling crime in the OR Tambo District, warning that law enforcement will continue to pursue criminals relentlessly.

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in court soon on charges related to possession of unlicensed firearms and suspected involvement in vehicle hijacking.
