Police probe fire at Mthatha’s Botha Sigcau building

Mthatha police are investigating the cause of a fire that broke out at the Botha Sigcau Building, an 11-storey government complex in the O.R. Tambo District.

MEC for Public Works, Infrastructure and Human Settlements, Siphokazi Lusithi, accompanied by Executive Mayor of King Sabata Dalindyebo, Nyaniso Nelani, visited the building to assess the damage and oversee emergency response efforts. The MEC met with officials from affected departments, including Health, COGTA, DEDEA, SAPS, Agriculture, the Deeds Office, Social Development, Transport, and DSRAC, to discuss alternative accommodation options and ensure continuity of government services.

Phucuka Penxa, Head of the Department of Public Works and Infrastructure, said the department is working to assess the extent of the damage, determine interventions, and plan for the building’s restoration.

The municipality praised residents for quickly reporting the incident, which allowed for a rapid deployment of firefighting teams. No injuries have been reported, though concerns remain about possible disruptions to services.
