Police have confirmed that a multi-disciplinary task team has successfully rearrested one of the eight detainees who escaped from Afsondering Police Station cells on 4 April 2026.
According to Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the group of escapees had originally been in custody for serious crimes, including murder, rape, crimen injuria, and assault.
One of the escapees, Siphelele Mkhulisi, an adult male who was being held on a murder charge, was rearrested on the morning of 6 April 2026 at approximately 08:00.
Police acted on intelligence indicating that Mkhulisi was asleep at his aunt’s residence in Masakala Location in Matatiele. A coordinated team consisting of Visible Policing (Vispol), K9 Unit members, and detectives approached the premises tactically. The suspect was found still asleep and was arrested without incident.
Brigadier Gantana confirmed that investigations into the circumstances surrounding the escape are ongoing. This includes a separate case of aiding and abetting. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to locate and arrest the remaining seven escapees, who are considered dangerous and face serious charges.
Members of the public have been strongly cautioned not to attempt to apprehend the suspects themselves. Anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of the remaining escapees is urged to contact the investigating team immediately.
