The suspended African National Congress Secretary-General Ace Magashula is adamant that he is still the SG of the party, despite receiving a letter from the party’s National Executive Council (NEC) that he will be placed on a six months leave. Magashule said he had remained in office because he had appealed the ANC’s decision to suspend him, instead suspended the ANC president, Cyril Ramaphosa. According to the SG, Ramaphosa is facing allegations of vote buying. Meanwhile the ANC says it has noted the letter written by Magashule to the president of the anc.

In a statement issued on Wednesday evening, it said the decisions of the NEC and National Working Committee (NWC) stand. ANC National Spokesperson, Pule Mabe says the NEC will be meeting this weekend and will accordingly respond to the Secretary General. The ANC’s NEC in March took a decision that members who are facing serious crime charges must step aside or face suspension, a decision that was repelled by some members. Magashule and his 15 co-accused are facing a string of charges including fraud, theft, corruption, money laundering and asbestos contraventions when he was still the Premier of the Free State Province. He will appear in the high Court in Bloemfontein on August 11.
