Tensions remain high in Mthatha as protesters continue to block key roads, including Nelson Mandela Drive (part of the N2) and sections of the R61 towards Libode, with barricades of rocks and burning tyres causing major disruptions.
Law enforcement agencies, including Public Order Policing (POPS), have cleared some routes and continue to manage the situation on the ground to restore order.
The demonstrations are driven by multiple community grievances, including water shortages, electricity-related issues, and complaints from victims of the June 2025 floods who allege neglect.
Businesses, government services, and schools have been heavily affected, with workers unable to report for duty and learners prevented from attending classes.
Authorities have urged motorists to avoid the Mthatha CBD and called on residents to remain calm while police work to stabilise the area.
