R19 Million Drug Bust: Alleged Foreign Kingpin Nabbed in Zwelitsha Operation

ZWELITSHA – 01 April 2026 – A high-level, intelligence-driven operation by the South African Police Service (SAPS) has led to the arrest of two suspects, including a 47-year-old foreign national believed to be a key figure in a large-scale drug distribution network operating across the Eastern Cape and beyond.

According to Eastern Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Nobuntu Gantana, the coordinated operation involved the SAPS Counter Narcotics Unit working closely with Organized Crime and Crime Prevention units. The investigation was launched following information about a suspected drug operation based in Quigney, KuGompo.

“In the early hours of the morning, members intercepted a white Toyota Corolla near King Phalo Airport. Upon searching the occupants, police discovered narcotics in their possession,” said Gantana.

The operation then extended to a flat at Kennaway Court in Quigney, where the main suspect allegedly consented to a search. Police uncovered a substantial cache of drugs along with a significant amount of cash believed to be proceeds of illegal activities.

The total estimated street value of the seized drugs is approximately R19,311,000, comprising:

Boss Mandrax tablets valued at R1,240,000
Cocaine worth R18,000,000
Rock/Crack valued at R18,000
Crystal Meth (Tik) valued at R13,000

In addition, police confiscated R77,340 in cash.

A 47-year-old male foreign national and a 36-year-old female were arrested and remain in police custody. They are expected to appear in the KuGompo Magistrate’s Court soon, facing charges related to the possession and dealing of drugs.

Gantana emphasized that the arrests highlight the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing and inter-unit cooperation.

“This operation demonstrates our commitment to dismantling drug networks and protecting communities from the harmful effects of illicit substances,” she said.

Police have confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with the possibility of more arrests as authorities continue to pursue leads linked to the case.
