R53 Million water project launched to deliver clean water and jobs to Matatiele communities
In a major step toward improving access to clean water, the Alfred Nzo District Municipality (ANDM), in partnership with the Matatiele Local Municipality (MLM), officially handed over the Fobane Water Scheme Phase 3 (Contract 2) to contractors in a ceremony held today. The project will benefit communities in Wards 15, 23, and 24 of the Matatiele Local Municipality.
With a budget of R53 million, the project aims to provide clean, drinkable water to five villages and improve the lives of approximately 24,000 households. Beyond water access, the initiative is set to create employment for around 30 local residents and open economic opportunities for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs). The infrastructure development is expected to be completed within 18 months.
“This project must never be interrupted by community conflicts—it is here to uplift and develop Matatiele,” said Matatiele Local Municipality Mayor, Councillor Patrick Stuurman, during his welcoming address.
Alfred Nzo District Municipality Councillor Sobane Mnukwa, who served as Executive Mayor for the day, emphasized the importance of community-government collaboration.
“Now that you are being provided with clean water, take ownership of your future. Use this opportunity to drive agricultural development and improve your area,” Mnukwa urged the community.
The event was attended by traditional leaders, councillors, and officials from both ANDM and MLM, marking a significant milestone in the district’s commitment to sustainable water infrastructure and community development.
