President Cyril Ramaphosa has called providing housing to victims of apartheid-era violence a “moral obligation” and a key step toward restoring dignity and reconciliation.
At the launch of the TRC Housing Assistance Reparations programme in Ndwedwe, KwaZulu-Natal, he said truth alone is not enough—reparations are essential to lasting reconciliation. Ndwedwe, heavily affected by political violence in the late 1980s and early 1990s, saw homes destroyed and families displaced.
Under the new 2026 regulations, verified TRC beneficiaries can receive a once-off grant for housing or new construction. In Ndwedwe, 220 beneficiaries were approved, with symbolic cheques representing R40 million handed over.
Ramaphosa emphasised that housing is central to human dignity and that the government remains committed to addressing historical injustices as South Africa marks 30 years of its Constitution.
