President Cyril Ramaphosa has acknowledged the confirmation of charges against Fannie Masemola, the National Commissioner of the South African Police Service, in connection with a multimillion-rand procurement scandal.
The charges, confirmed by the National Prosecuting Authority, relate to an allegedly irregular tender awarded to a controversial businessman Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala. Masemola is expected to appear in court in April 21.
Ramaphosa also noted the arrest of 12 senior police officers linked to the same procurement matter, describing the developments as serious.
The President said he would address the matter in line with the law, while working with the Minister of Police to ensure that SAPS remains stable and continues to fulfil its policing mandate.
