RURAL REVIVAL: Phirintsu Village Pins Hopes on Goat Farming Initiative

In a bid to tackle rampant unemployment and empower its youth, the rural community of Phirintsu village and surrounding areas is buzzing with excitement over a groundbreaking goat farming project spearheaded by the Umzintlanga Royal Development Organization, an NPO.

The initiative, targeting young people, women, and the unemployed, aims to establish a communal goat farming business, focusing on the lucrative market for organic Nguni goat meat. The project promises not only to create jobs but also to equip participants with valuable skills, courtesy of a 12-month training program. “We’ve identified goat farming as a viable business opportunity for our community,” says Ngubengcuka Matomane, Head of Development at Umzintlanga Royal Development Organization. “Our goal is to empower our people, especially the youth and women, to become self-sufficient and contribute to the local economy.” The
response from the community has been overwhelming, with over 1000 individuals from surrounding villages registering interest in the project. Participants will receive a monthly stipend of R2500, pending government approval, while undergoing training.

“This is great news,” says Mangaliso Dada, a 21-year-old unemployed villager. “It shows that government on its own can’t help with the fight against unemployment. Organisations such as these play a crucial role in building communities.”

Chief Xolisa Siphambo praised the initiative, urging community members to support and participate in the project. “This project will have a positive impact on our community, and we’re grateful to Mr. Matomane and his team for their dedication,” he said.

Lungiswa Nkaleseng, a 42-year-old woman from Ntabelanga village, welcomed the project, saying, “It’s good that the project doesn’t discriminate against women. Farming is still male-dominated, so this will help close the gap.”

Akhona Siphambo, Ward Councilor at ward 14 says he hopes the initiative will give hope in the community and also fight alcohol abuse. Mr Matomane says the goat farming project will be launched in April latest May. Depending on the response of the government SETAs and government departments in general to make allocation of funds to be available for training.
