SABC journalist Natasha Phiri suspended over alleged payment for information

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has placed journalist Natasha Phiri on precautionary suspension following allegations that she received money in exchange for information.

The development comes after Sergeant Fannie Nkosi testified at the Madlanga Commission, where he admitted to paying Phiri R500. Nkosi’s testimony forms part of a broader inquiry into his alleged links with Lieutenant General Shadrack Sibiya and businessman Vusimuzi Matlala, also known as “Cat”.

During his eighth day on the witness stand on 23 March 2026, Nkosi was questioned extensively about his communications with Phiri. Evidence presented at the commission included WhatsApp messages indicating that Nkosi obtained the contact details of controversial blogger Musa Khawula from Phiri and paid her for the information.

In response to the allegations, the SABC confirmed that it had taken action against the journalist pending the outcome of an internal investigation.

“The SABC views this matter in a serious light and has placed Ms Natasha Phiri on a precautionary suspension while the matter is being investigated,” the broadcaster said in a statement.

“The SABC always encourages its staff members to uphold the corporation’s values of trust, respect and integrity in all their interactions,” the statement added.

The public broadcaster has not provided further details on the investigation or indicated how long the suspension will remain in place. Meanwhile, proceedings at the Madlanga Commission are expected to continue as more evidence emerges regarding Nkosi’s alleged network of contacts.
