Sassa distances itself from alleged misuse of logo by 1Life insurance

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has distanced itself from alleged misuse of its logo by 1Life Insurance following the circulation of promotional material suggesting a partnership between the two entities.

Sassa has firmly denied any association, stating that it “strongly distances itself” from the claims and does not partner with 1Life Insurance to provide funeral cover. The agency reiterated that it does not collaborate with insurance companies or funeral schemes at any stage, warning that such claims are misleading to the public.

The agency further cautioned insurers and funeral service providers against unlawfully using its branding. “We caution insurance companies or funeral schemes from the unlawful use of our logo and misusing the Sassa brand,” it said.

In response, 1Life Insurance acknowledged Sassa’s concerns and said it takes issues relating to brand usage seriously. The company maintained that it does not use the Sassa logo in its authorised promotional material and does not market any products as being linked to the agency.

Addressing the image at the centre of the controversy, 1Life said it was not authentic and did not form part of any official campaign or communication approved by the company.

The insurer has pledged to investigate the alleged misuse of branding, assuring the public that all partners are required to comply strictly with its brand standards. It also welcomed engagement with Sassa, stating that any concerns can be formally submitted for proper assessment and resolution.
