The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning for heavy rain and severe thunderstorms expected to impact several parts of the country.
Severe storms accompanied by heavy rainfall are forecast over the western parts of North West, the north-western Free State, and the north-eastern Northern Cape. These conditions may lead to localised flooding and damage to vulnerable formal and informal settlements, as well as infrastructure.
SAWS also warned that conditions are favourable for the first frost of the season along the Lesotho border, as well as in the southern parts of the Free State and Northern Cape, and the northern areas of the Eastern Cape.
For Wednesday, fine weather is expected in the extreme south, while morning and evening fog may affect the far north-western interior. Elsewhere, conditions will be cloudy and cool, turning partly cloudy in the afternoon with isolated showers in the extreme north-west.
“It will become partly cloudy from the afternoon, with isolated showers and rain in the extreme north-west. Winds along the coast will be moderate to fresh south-westerly, becoming light to moderate southerly to south-easterly from the afternoon,” SAWS said.
Meanwhile, a warning for damaging waves has been issued along the coast between Port Edward and Kosi Bay.
These conditions could disrupt small harbours and ports, with a risk to small vessels of taking on water or capsizing. Navigation at sea is expected to be difficult.
