Suspended Police Minister Senzo Mchunu has begun a return to active politics within the African National Congress (ANC), following the collapse of his voluntary step-aside period.
Mchunu had stepped aside earlier this year amid allegations relating to his alleged association with suspected drug kingpin Vusimuzi Matlala, as well as broader scrutiny over policing decisions. He has not been criminally charged.
His return to party activities has been confirmed after he resumed participation in ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) duties, marking his first visible re-entry into political structures in recent months.
Mchunu’s reappearance included delivering a eulogy at the funeral of ANC member Bhekabathethwa Mthethwa in Richards Bay, signalling what insiders describe as a quiet political comeback.
According to his spokesperson, Sithembiso Mshengu, Mchunu formally informed the ANC leadership of his intention to return, rather than seeking permission.
“He voluntarily stepped aside… he wrote to the party to inform the leadership that he was returning to his position. He is not facing any criminal charges to be forced to step aside. He took the decision to protect the image of the ANC following allegations raised by Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi,” Mshengu said.
Mchunu’s return comes despite ongoing public scrutiny over the allegations, with political observers expecting renewed debate within ANC structures over accountability and leadership standards.
