It’s do-or-die for the Sharks in the United Rugby Championship (URC), with as few as four matches left in their season following a disappointing exit from the EPCR Challenge Cup. Last week, the Durban side were knocked out by Connacht Rugby in Galway, ending their hopes of adding another European trophy to their cabinet.
Currently sitting 10th on the URC standings, the Sharks face an uphill battle to reach the play-offs. A late-season surge is required, but the end of their Challenge Cup campaign allows them to focus exclusively on domestic fixtures—a decision the coaching staff hope will boost their chances.
Winning the Challenge Cup in 2024 had guaranteed Champions Cup qualification, but this season, balancing European play-off demands with critical URC matches proved unsustainable. The Sharks have now prioritized a single path to the Champions Cup: success in the URC.
Injury woes have hampered their season, with several key players absent during the trip to Ireland. However, coach JP Pietersen will welcome back a host of Springbok stars, including Siya Kolisi, Bongi Mbomambi, Grant Williams, Jordan Hendrikse, Jaden Hendrikse, Phepsi Buthelezi, Emile van Heerden, Jurenzo Julius, Marvin Orie, Jason Jenkins, and captain Andre Esterhuizen.
The Sharks face Ospreys Rugby in Wales next weekend, a fixture now carrying enormous weight. With their URC play-off hopes hanging by a thread, a strong performance will be essential to keep their season alive.
As Pietersen puts it, this is the Sharks’ final shot: “It’s all or nothing now.”
