Security teams are on the scene of a cash-in-transit heist that unfolded on Old Inanda Road in the Verulam area north of Durban on Monday afternoon.
KwaZulu-Natal VIP Security and emergency medical teams responded after the Reaction Unit South Africa (RUSA) Operations Centre received multiple calls from members of the public at around 13:25 reporting a robbery in progress. Several callers also reported hearing explosions in the area.
Reaction officers were immediately dispatched. While responding, they encountered alleged spotters armed with high-calibre rifles, leading to a shootout. A response vehicle sustained two gunshot impacts during the exchange.
The suspects fled the scene in two vehicles heading towards Inanda.
The RUSA Robinson R44 helicopter was airborne shortly before 14:00, conducting an aerial search for the suspects.
No reaction officers were injured in the incident. Authorities said it remains unclear at this stage whether any of the suspects were wounded during the exchange of fire.
Police investigations are ongoing.
