Sisisi Tolashe to honour top matric achievers benefiting from social grants

Sisisi Tolashe will on Thursday, 09 April 2026, recognise and celebrate the academic achievements of top-performing Grade 12 social grant beneficiaries in East London, Eastern Cape.

The event will honour 15 learners who excelled in their 2025 National Senior Certificate examinations, including participants in the RISIHA Programme. RISIHA, meaning “resilience” in Xitsonga, is a community-based initiative focused on early intervention and support to help vulnerable children transition towards stability and success through access to essential services.

Caregivers of the learners will also attend the ceremony, which aims to highlight the impact of South Africa’s social protection system in improving the lives of disadvantaged families. The initiative further seeks to inspire other social grant beneficiaries to strive for academic excellence despite challenging circumstances.

Government says social grants have, over the years, played a crucial role in alleviating poverty, contributing to improved school attendance, increased enrolment for the National Senior Certificate, and better pass rates among learners from underprivileged backgrounds.
