Six Premjis Jewellers employees on trial over R3.2 million theft allegations

Six women, including two managers, have appeared in the Durban Magistrate’s Court facing charges of allegedly stealing jewellery worth more than R3.2 million from Premjis Jewellers.

The accused — Nailash Lala, Reshmar Raghubar, Samendrie Pillay, Yagna Ramdeen, Kamentha Pillai and Sashmila Rajkumar — have all pleaded not guilty. They were arrested in September 2023 and released on R20,000 bail each.

The court heard from store director Vishnu Pather that the alleged theft was discovered in June 2023 after three high-end Michel Herbelin watches went missing. The State alleges the incidents occurred between 2018 and 2023 as part of a coordinated scheme involving stock manipulation.

Lala has denied the allegations, claiming she was not consistently on duty during the period and that her rights were violated during the investigation.

The trial continues.
