Police in Despatch are investigating cases of murder and arson following a violent shooting incident in the Khayamnandi area on Sunday night.
According to police, officers responded to a complaint of a vehicle on fire in Mgibe Street at approximately 23:50 on 22 March 2026. Upon arrival, they found a Toyota Quantum taxi engulfed in flames.
During further investigation, police discovered the body of a 27-year-old man inside a nearby house. He had sustained multiple gunshot wounds.
It is alleged that five suspects gained entry to the residence by posing as police officers before forcing the door open.
The deceased, who has not yet been named, was the son of a local taxi owner and worked as a driver. The burnt taxi belonged to his father. In addition to the Quantum, three other taxis and the victim’s Volkswagen Polo were also damaged during the incident.
No arrests have been made at this stage, and the motive for the attack remains under investigation.
