South Africa, Mozambique move to solve Lebombo Border congestion

Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says South Africa and Mozambique are entering a “solution phase” to ease long-standing congestion at the Lebombo/Ressano Garcia border.

Following a joint December 2025 visit to assess infrastructure at Kilometre 4 (Mozambique) and Kilometre 7 (South Africa), several measures have been implemented. Co-located processing now allows Mozambican officials to operate on the South African side, speeding up traffic and reducing pressure on the N4.

Upgrades at Kilometre 7 include cameras, improved cargo-processing infrastructure, and new customs systems. Once complete, the facility will prioritise pre-cleared cargo and support a one-stop border system. Plans for a single window platform will allow traders to interact with multiple agencies through a single system.

Creecy stressed that alignment between the two countries is essential for success and said the improvements aim to enhance trade and passenger movement, particularly for transporters affected by border inefficiencies.

“This is the solution phase to a problem that has long choked movement between our nations,” she said.
