Agriculture Minister John Steenhuisen will officially launch South Africa’s nationwide mass vaccination campaign against Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) in KwaZulu-Natal on Friday.
The high-priority intervention follows the arrival of one million high-potency vaccine doses from Biogénesis Bagó in Argentina on Saturday.
The Department of Agriculture described the shipment as the largest single consignment of FMD vaccines ever to enter the country, marking the operational start of its 10-Year Strategic Plan aimed at vaccinating the national herd.
Millions of additional vaccine doses have been secured and are expected to arrive soon.
According to the department, the vaccination programme will be implemented in phases, beginning in the highest-risk areas before expanding to lower-risk regions.
The official launch will take place at Colbourne Dairy Farm near Mooi River in the uMngeni Municipality.
