A devastating storm accompanied by fierce winds has claimed the lives of two men in Ngwetsheni, KwaBhaca, after their vehicle was violently lifted and hurled against a wall.
According to a press statement issued by Communications Manager Khoboso Lebenya, the tragic incident occurred on Sunday, 5 April 2026, when severe weather conditions swept through Ward 14. The victims, aged between 29 and 35, were inside a Volkswagen Polo when powerful winds lifted the car off the ground and flung it into a nearby structure, resulting in their deaths.
The Alfred Nzo District and Umzimvubu Local Municipalities have since extended their condolences and support to the bereaved families. A delegation led by Umzimvubu Local Municipality Mayor, Cllr Zukiswa Ndevu, alongside Cllr Eunice Diko—Member of the Mayoral Committee for Community Development Services in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality, representing the Executive Mayor—visited affected households in the area.
Speaking during the visit, Cllr Ndevu conveyed heartfelt sympathy and emphasized the importance of unity during this difficult time. She noted that increasingly unpredictable weather conditions require communities and government to work together to restore normalcy and ensure that urgent assistance reaches those in need.
Traditional leader Inkosi Nosizwe also expressed gratitude for the swift response from government, calling for continued cooperation in supporting affected residents.
Cllr Eunice Diko urged residents to remain vigilant during severe weather, warning that heavy rains and thunderstorms can quickly become dangerous. She stressed that community safety remains a top priority and encouraged everyone to take necessary precautions.
Municipal officials are currently conducting on-site assessments to determine the extent of the damage and coordinate relief efforts. Relevant government departments, including those providing psychosocial support, have been activated. Authorities have also visited injured individuals receiving treatment in hospital.
Residents have been asked to remain patient as damaged electricity infrastructure continues to affect power supply in the area.
