Teen Girl Killed, Two Injured as Lightning Strikes in Matatiele
A 14-year-old girl has died and two others were injured after being struck by lightning at Fiva Location in Matatiele on Monday.
According to reports, the children were travelling with several adults in a bakkie headed to Rholweni to celebrate a birthday. The vehicle struggled to climb a steep, muddy hill due to poor road conditions. The driver then asked the passengers to disembark and carry some of the luggage on foot to lighten the load.
While the bakkie managed to move up the hill, the group—walking behind with their belongings—was caught in a sudden lightning strike. The 14-year-old girl died at the scene. The two injured individuals were rushed to Taylor Bequest Hospital in Matatiele, where they are currently recovering.
Disaster Management in the Alfred Nzo District Municipality has since issued a warning about severe weather expected throughout the week. Officials caution residents to prepare for heavy rains and thunderstorms, urging communities to remain vigilant and take necessary safety precautions.
