Following a strong windstorm that claimed the lives of Lihle Meyato (29) and Qhamani Langa (35) in Ngwetsheni village, KwaBhaca, on Sunday, Umzimvubu Local Municipality has stepped up relief efforts.
According to a preliminary report by Alfred Nzo District Disaster Management Services, six households were left homeless, eight homes in nearby Goxe village were affected, and two sustained partial damage. Four individuals were hospitalised, with two already discharged.
Mayor Zukiswa Ndevu extended condolences to the families and said the municipality is coordinating immediate relief and long-term recovery. Eskom teams are repairing damaged electricity lines, while Social Development and SASSA provide psychosocial support, vouchers, mattresses, and school uniforms.
Mayor Ndevu, accompanied by local churches and government departments, continues to visit affected areas to monitor ongoing needs and ensure support reaches all households.
