Three suspects are in police custody in Gqeberha following their arrest on Wednesday night for allegedly attempting to bribe police officers with nearly R20 000 in cash.
Eastern Cape police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said the suspects allegedly offered officers R19 500 in an attempt to evade legal consequences during an official operation in the region.
According to police, officers were carrying out their duties when the suspects allegedly tried to influence them by offering the cash bribe. The officers refused the money and immediately arrested the trio. Their vehicle was also impounded.
The suspects are expected to appear in the local magistrate’s court soon on charges of corruption and bribery.
Police have reiterated that offering a bribe to a law enforcement official is a criminal offence and warned that those found guilty will face the full might of the law. Investigations are ongoing.
