Three police officers apprehended for corruption and defeating the ends of justice

Three police officers have been released on R5000 bail each by the Alexandre Magistrate court on Tuesday.
Sergeant Jackson Mthombeni (40), Sergeant Sophie Matodzi (41) and Constable Kgomotso Molefe (39) and two civilians Sheldon Mhlanga (38) and Charlene Marizane (31) are charged with corruption, defeating the ends of justice, conspiracy to commit a crime, theft and kidnapping in Johannesburg.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Thatohatsi Mavimbela, saidi n June 2022, a complaint was received by members of the Serious Corruption Investigation (SCI) from a complainant who alleges police officials who were driving a marked police vehicle stopped him and demanded he takes them to his apartment.
“On arrival, the complainant and his apartment were searched. Upon searching, the officers are alleged to have taken the complainants luxury watch valued at R700 000, traffic registers, driver’s license and liquor without his permission. The officers are then alleged to have demanded the complainant to transfer R150 000 into a standard bank account belonging Charlene Marizane in exchange for his belongings that were taken.
A bag, driver’s license and traffic registers were found in the private vehicle belonging to Sheldon Mhlanga,” he said.
Provincial Head Major General Ebrahim Kadwa has commended the investigating officer for a meticulous investigation and sends a strong warning to police officers to desist.
The matter has been postponed to 05 February 2024, while Sheldon Mhlanga case is remanded to 05 February 2024 for his formal bail application.
