Police in the OR Tambo District have arrested three suspects in connection with separate incidents of murder, carjacking and possession of an unlicensed firearm over the weekend.
According to police, two male suspects aged 19 and 20 were arrested by Tsolo police in the early hours of Sunday morning following a fatal carjacking incident in Tsolo Village.
Police responded to reports of a carjacking at around 04:00 and found a 30-year-old male victim who had sustained multiple stab wounds to his upper body. The victim was declared dead at the scene.
Authorities discovered the victim’s hijacked vehicle stuck in a nearby hole. Officers managed to apprehend two suspects while they were attempting to flee the scene. The keys to the stolen vehicle were found in the possession of one of the suspects.
Police also noted that the suspects’ clothing was stained with blood, which has since been collected as part of forensic evidence that could link them directly to the crime scene.
A third suspect who was allegedly involved in the incident managed to evade arrest and is still being sought by police.
In a separate and unrelated incident in Lusikisiki, community members in Mdeni locality, Gqubeni Administrative Area, apprehended a 23-year-old man at around 10:15 on the same day after discovering he was in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with an erased serial number and ammunition.
The suspect was handed over to police and subsequently arrested on charges of possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
All three suspects are expected to appear in their respective Magistrates’ Courts soon to face the charges against them.
OR Tambo District Commissioner, Major General Norman Modishana, strongly condemned the brutal killing of the 30-year-old victim during the carjacking.
Modishana urged investigators to ensure that all necessary evidence is gathered to build a watertight case.
“The police must leave no stone unturned in collecting all relevant and essential evidence so that justice for the deceased can be served,” he said.
