Two arrested in 2022 KZN political killing; as probe of 121 dockets intensifies
The KwaZulu-Natal Political Killings Task Team has achieved a major breakthrough in its ongoing efforts to combat political violence, with the arrests of two suspects in connection with the November 2022 murder of Xolani Ndlovu-Ntombela. Ndlovu-Ntombela was shot dead at his home in Mpophomeni after allegedly working to expose illegal land sales in the Emasosheni area.
The arrests form part of investigations into 121 case dockets recently handed over to the task team from Gauteng. The two suspects—aged 55 and 23—were already in custody for unrelated charges. They now face additional charges including murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
The suspects appeared in the Howick Magistrate’s Court today, Monday 8 September 2025. At this time, there is no confirmed information about the outcome of their court appearance. No decision has yet been reported regarding bail, remand, or other court orders.
KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi commended the efforts of the task team and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), saying, “This case is one of many we are actively pursuing to bring justice to victims and their families.”
The 121 dockets had previously been removed from the task team amid allegations of political interference. Their reinstatement followed widespread public outcry as well as a directive from National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola. The arrests are seen as part of a renewed push by authorities to tackle political violence in KwaZulu-Natal, including high profile killings of councillors and public representatives.
