Two male suspects have been arrested following an armed robbery incident targeting high school learners in the Lungqongqweni locality, Lusikisiki.
Off-duty members of the South African Police Service OR Tambo District Task Team responded to a complaint on Tuesday, 7 April 2026, and apprehended the suspects upon arrival at the scene.
The suspects, both from the same locality, were found in possession of an unlicensed 9mm pistol with an erased serial number, along with one live round of ammunition.
According to police, the duo had been robbing high school learners in the area at gunpoint. Community members intervened and managed to corner the suspects before police arrived, leading to their arrest.
Further investigations revealed that the suspects were also linked to an earlier armed robbery that took place on Friday, 3 April 2026. During that incident, two cellphones and cash were stolen from learners.
Police recovered the two stolen cellphones from the suspects, positively linking them to the previous robbery.
The suspects are expected to face charges related to armed robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition. Police investigations are ongoing.
