Two suspects believed to be linked to a cash-in-transit robbery in Verulam were shot and killed during a shootout with police in the early hours of Tuesday, 24 February 2026.
The suspects were cornered at Nhlazatshe in Shayamoya, Edendale, following a police intelligence-driven operation.
On Monday afternoon, 23 February 2026, at least 12 armed suspects allegedly ambushed a cash delivery vehicle at the corner of Jabu Ngcobo and Fairview roads in Verulam. The group reportedly forced the truck to a standstill before robbing security guards of three firearms and fleeing with an undisclosed amount of cash.
Just after midnight, police received intelligence that some of the suspects involved in the robbery were hiding at a house in Edendale. Officers operationalised the information and proceeded to the identified property.
According to police, a shootout broke out when officers arrived at the house. Two suspects were shot and fatally wounded during the exchange of fire, while another suspect managed to evade arrest.
Police recovered three firearms — two rifles and a handgun — along with several rounds of ammunition at the scene. A VW Polo allegedly used in the commission of the robbery was also found at the property. In addition, a bakkie fitted with numerous number plates was discovered inside the garage.
Investigations are ongoing as police continue the search for the outstanding suspects linked to the brazen heist.
